Kate Bateman, an ambitious young filmmaker hoping to bolster her anemic career, sets out to make a feature-length documentary on John Martel, a charismatic vagrant struggling to rediscover some sense of belonging in a society wishing he would simply fade away. While she devotes more and more time to her project and the enigmatic man at the centre of it, Kate's life and work become strangely intertwined, to the point where she loses her perspective as to what is real and what is being created as real for her camera. Underwhere refers to the tawdry Mile-End basement John Martel holes up in. It is also the unknown and unpredictable, slowly to be revealed, within our characters.
